In today’s world, the easiest way to make money online from home is to just turn on your laptop, connect to wifi, and use the expertise that you already have in your head to sell a service online! To make money selling a service online, there are three main service types that you could offer….

 
 

Online Service Type 1: A “Done for You” Service

The first way to sell a service online is via a “done for you service.” This is a service that you do FOR your clients. A done for you service could be something like web design, graphic design, copywriting, bookkeeping — any of those things where you take the tasks off of your client's plate and you do it for them.

Online Service Type 2: One-on-One Coaching

The second way to sell a service online is through one-on-one coaching. With one-on-one coaching, you teach your clients how to get the desired outcome that they want. So this basically means that you’d use your expertise to create an plan for your clients to go out and execute, as you support them.

Typically, one-on-one coaching is done over a three-month or six-month time period, and you’d have weekly calls, as you check in with your clients and walk them through the step-by-step process that you created.

Some examples of this are career coaching, financial coaching, health or fitness training — anything where you’re guiding your clients from point A to point B with your process.

Online Service Type 3: Consulting

The third way to sell a service online through is consulting. Consulting is a bit more hands off than coaching. When you’re doing consulting, you’d assess your client's problems through maybe one or two meetings to identify their issues. And then, as a consultant, you make recommendations for a plan that they can execute to fix whatever their issues are.

The main difference between consulting and coaching is…consultants just hand over the plan for clients to execute on their own and they don't “hold the client's hands,” as they implement the plan, like coaches do.


So now that you know what are the options are for the three types of services that you can sell online…you may be wondering, okay, so how do I sell it? Tell me how to sell it!

Here are the three elements you need to have to sell a service online:

#1: Become a specialist in one service type.

The very first thing to do is to specialize in one service type. This is extremely important because oftentimes when people are new entrepreneurs, they tend to want to do ALL the things. But doing that actually backfires, when it comes to attracting premium clients, because if you’re too “all over the place,” premium clients will think you’re probably not that great at any of the things that you claim you can do and they’ll look elsewhere for other people to hire.

However, when you become a specialist, you can really show people that you know what you're talking about. You can show them that you’re an expert at what you do and you’re the go-to person, when they need help in your area of expertise.

Being a specialist also makes it easier for people to actually remember what you do, so you can get more client referrals in the future. Because if people have to think like, “Oh, she does this, she does that. She does this and also that….” They're not going to be able to remember what you do to be able to refer people to you.

Disclaimer: If you're super new to entrepreneurship and you don't know what you want to specialize in yet, that’s totally normal! So take some time to experiment with different service types that interest you to figure out which one will be the service for you. There's nothing wrong with working with family and friends and maybe coworkers to dabble in different services that interest you, until you figure out exactly what you like. And then, once you identify what you want to specialize in, go all in on that one particular area and that’ll be the service you’ll offer to make money online from home!

#2: Sell a service online with your own step-by-step process for working with clients.

The second step for selling a service online is creating your own step-by-step process. You need a process for how you're going to bring clients on board. You need a process for how you're going to deliver your services to the clients. And you need a process for customer service and client communication. For you to be taken seriously as a business owner, you MUST have all of your processes mapped out.

For instance, what's going to happen after a client says “yes” to working with you? What's the next step after that? Do you have your process for delivering your services broken down into stages? Like what does stage one look like? What does stage two look like? What does stage three look like? How do you off-board clients?

Having all these questions answered is the hallmark of a real, professional business, because a lot of times as entrepreneurs, people forget that they have to set up their own processes themselves because when we're working in our 9-5s, we just walk in the door with all the processes already established and they just tell us what to do every day and we up and we just do it. And we don't necessarily have to build out a plan or processes from scratch.

But if you want to be serious about selling your services online, once you figure out what to specialize in, then you have to figure out your process for getting your clients from point A — the starting point when they begin working with you to point B — where their problem is resolved and the service has been delivered.

So take the time to create an outline for yourself and write out every single step in your process, even the steps that seem mundane to you. Steps that seem mundane to you may be really profound to your clients, so don’t skip anything!

Pro Tip: Having a strong client process also helps to boost your credibility as a business owner, because premium clients want to work with people who have a plan and who are organized!

#3: Make money online from home by creating an online marketing plan to attract clients to you.

The next step for selling your services online is to create an online marketing plan to make sure you're able to create content consistently that positions you as an expert that builds trust and credibility with your target clients.

Using online marketing is the easiest way to sell online. That’s because the goal of online marketing is to get clients to come to you to inquire about your services. With effective online marketing, you don't have to chase clients down. You don't have to be spammy in their DMs saying, “Hey, Hey, Hey, work with me. I have openings!” Being able to attract clients with online marketing makes it SUPER easy to make money online from home.

All you have to do is create excellent content, whether it's a weekly blog post, weekly podcast, or weekly video. And then create social media content to supplement it. The key for this working effectively is making sure your content is being seen by the right people. So you may have to do a little research to figure out where your ideal clients are hanging out online to make sure you’re marketing on the right social media platforms.

Your social media content should be driving clients to sign up to work with you, which means leading them to schedule discovery calls with you, as the call-to-action in your content and social media posts. And on the discovery calls is where you’d enroll clients to begin working with you!
